Neurosurgeon,
Dr. Nozipo Maraire,
M.D., FAANS
Dr. Maraire has been a pioneering figure in the field of neuroscience and brain health for over 30 years. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Harvard University and her medical degree from Columbia University in New York. She completed her neurosurgery training at Yale University, where she became the second woman and the first African to achieve this distinction. Dr. Maraire received the prestigious Clinical Fellowship Award from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, enabling her to train under Dr. Fred Epstein in pediatric neurosurgery in New York City.
During her residency, Dr. Maraire authored Zenzele: A Letter for My Daughter, a novel that was honored as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1996. Her contributions to neuroscience extend to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.
In 2010, her vision for accessible and advanced healthcare in Southern Africa through Ecosurgica earned her the British Airways Entrepreneur Face-to-Face Award. In 2020, she co-founded the Zimbabwe National Covid-19 Action Trust (ZINCAT) to address the COVID-19 crisis. Dr. Maraire has served on various influential boards, including the OMLAC board, Beit Trust Foundation, Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee, UWC Atlantic, and as a founding board member of ZICCA and INZI.
Dr. Maraire is the founder of the Cityzen Wellness Centre, which focuses on holistic wellness and rehabilitation. She also established Mweya Green and Veri-Green, organizations committed to climate action and carbon credit consulting. Her TED Talk, "Indigenous and Ingenious," has received widespread acclaim. As an accomplished speaker, she has been a keynote speaker at prestigious universities in the U.S., including Harvard and Elon University, and has delivered inspirational talks for corporate and educational institutions such as OMLAC, USAP, and Women in Surgery Africa.
